A516 Gr.65/70 Preheat for GMAW — over 2-1/2"

Per AWS D1.1:2025 Table 5.11, the minimum preheat for A516 Gr.65/70 welded with GMAW at over 2-1/2" is 225°F (110°C), Category B. Preheat below this raises hydrogen-cracking risk in the heat-affected zone; the same temperature is the minimum interpass limit maintained through the weld.

GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding)

GMAW (MIG) feeds continuous solid wire with shielding gas — an inherently low-hydrogen process assigned to Category B in Table 5.11.

For pressure vessel work, GMAW with ER70S-6 provides excellent deposition rates on long seam welds. Gas backing with argon on back-purged root passes produces a smooth internal weld profile that satisfies radiographic acceptance criteria. Shielding gas purity is critical for vessel code quality; dew point must be below -40°F.

GMAW Tips for Pressure Vessel and Low-Temperature Steels

For A516 Grades 65/70 pressure vessel plate (35–38 ksi yield), GMAW spray transfer at 260–300 A with 0.045" ER70S-6 delivers 8–12 lb/hr on vessel longitudinal and circumferential seams. Category B only — no non-LH SMAW option. On thick Gr.70 plate, Category B minimum preheat is 150°F [65°C] over 1-1/2 thru 2-1/2 in and 225°F [110°C] over 2-1/2 in. Maintain interpass below 400°F for consistent weld metal properties on multi-pass vessel shell joints.

Filler Metal for GMAW

Common wire: ER70S-6 (AWS A5.18). Diameter: 0.035" for thin sections and out-of-position, 0.045" for production flat/horizontal. Shielding gas: 75/25 Ar/CO2 (standard), 90/10 Ar/CO2 (less spatter, better profile), or 100% CO2 (deeper penetration, more spatter). Contact-tip-to-work distance: 1/2" to 3/4".

A516 Gr.65/70

ASTM A516 Grades 65 and 70 are the higher-strength pressure vessel plates in this specification, with 65 and 70 ksi minimum tensile strength and 35/38 ksi minimum yield respectively. Used in higher-pressure vessels, distillation columns, and reactor shells, they require low-hydrogen welding processes (Category B only in Table 5.11) due to their higher carbon equivalent compared to Grades 55/60. Carbon limits are 0.28% max for Gr.65 and 0.31% max for Gr.70 on thicker plate, pushing the CE-IIW into the 0.43-0.48 range where non-low-hydrogen SMAW is no longer prequalified. A516 Gr.70 is the single most specified plate grade for ASME Section VIII Division 1 pressure vessels, accounting for an estimated 40%+ of all vessel plate orders in North America.

Why This Preheat for A516 Gr.65/70 with GMAW

Higher-strength pressure vessel plate requiring low-hydrogen processes only. This steel is prequalified only with low-hydrogen processes under Table 5.11. With GMAW, the continuous solid wire and gas shielding in GMAW produce inherently low hydrogen levels, typically 2-4 mL/100g. The 225°F minimum preheat balances the steel’s strength level and carbon equivalent against the hydrogen control provided by GMAW. Non-low-hydrogen SMAW is not an option for this grade under D1.1 prequalified WPS.

Typical Applications for A516 Gr.65/70

Used in higher-pressure process vessels, distillation columns, reactor shells, thick-wall accumulators, high-pressure heat exchangers, and flare knockout drums. A516 Gr.70 plate is common in ASME VIII Division 1 vessels above 250 psi design pressure and in columns operating under hydroprocessing conditions. Longitudinal seams on heavy-wall vessels and nozzle-to-shell set-on welds are critical joint configurations requiring strict preheat compliance. Wall thicknesses in high-pressure service can exceed 3" on large-diameter vessels, with shell diameters from 24" to over 15 feet. Post-weld heat treatment per ASME Code is frequently required for A516 Gr.70 above 1-1/4" wall thickness, adding PWHT soak temperature (typically 1100-1200°F) and hold time (1 hour per inch of thickness) to the fabrication sequence. PWHT stress-relieves the weld and HAZ but does not change the preheat requirements during the initial welding operation.

Why Preheat Matters at over 2-1/2"

The heaviest sections demand the highest preheat in Table 5.11. Multi-pass sequences require maintaining interpass temperature throughout.

What is the minimum preheat for A516 Gr.65/70 with GMAW at over 2-1/2"?
When welding A516 Gr.65/70 at over 2-1/2" using GMAW, the minimum preheat temperature is 225°F (110°C) per AWS D1.1:2025 Table 5.11, Category B. GMAW places this combination in Category B. This is also the minimum interpass temperature — the joint must not cool below 225°F between passes.
What Table 5.11 category applies to A516 Gr.65/70 with GMAW?
When using GMAW on A516 Gr.65/70, the combination falls under Category B in AWS D1.1:2025 Table 5.11. Low-hydrogen SMAW, SAW, GMAW, or FCAW process. At over 2-1/2" thickness, Category B with GMAW requires a minimum preheat of 225°F (110°C).
Why is preheat 225°F for A516 Gr.65/70 at over 2-1/2"?
The 225°F preheat for A516 Gr.65/70 at over 2-1/2" when using GMAW reflects the combination of the steel's hardenability and the increased restraint at this thickness. GMAW delivers controlled hydrogen levels, but at this thickness the preheat must slow the cooling rate in the heat-affected zone, giving diffusible hydrogen more time to escape before the steel transforms to a crack-susceptible microstructure.
How do I maintain preheat on very thick plate?
For material over 2-1/2”, preheat is typically applied with oxy-fuel torches or electric resistance blankets and monitored with contact thermometers or temp-sticks. The entire weld zone must reach the minimum temperature before welding begins, and interpass temperature is checked before each new pass. Insulating blankets help retain heat during pauses in multi-pass welding.
