A516 Gr.55/60 Preheat for SMAW (low-hydrogen) — up to 3/4"

Per AWS D1.1:2025 Table 5.11, the minimum preheat for A516 Gr.55/60 welded with SMAW (low-hydrogen) at up to 3/4" is 32°F (0°C), Category B. Preheat below this raises hydrogen-cracking risk in the heat-affected zone; the same temperature is the minimum interpass limit maintained through the weld.

SMAW (Low-Hydrogen)

Low-hydrogen SMAW (E7018/E7016) uses basic-coated electrodes requiring rod oven storage, assigned to Category B in Table 5.11.

On pressure vessel plate, E7018 is the standard manual electrode for nozzle welds, manhole reinforcements, and repair welding. ASME Section IX procedure qualifications typically require all-weld-metal tensile and guided bend tests. Rod moisture control is critical in vessel fabrication because vessel codes impose stricter hydrogen limits than structural codes.

SMAW-LH Tips for Pressure Vessel and Low-Temperature Steels

For A516 Grades 55/60 pressure vessel plate (30–32 ksi yield, Category A and B), E7018 at 130–170 A handles nozzle reinforcement pads, manway cover welds, and repair welds on tank shells. A516 Gr.55/60 has one of the wider acceptable hydrogen ranges of structural plate — both Category A and Category B apply. SMAW-LH (Category B) provides the lower preheat path.

Filler Metal for SMAW-LH

Electrode: E7018 (AWS A5.1). Table 5.7 lists it for Group I and Group II base metals only; Groups III, IV and V take AWS A5.5 low-alloy electrodes from Table 5.7. Diameter: 1/8" (general/out-of-position), 5/32" (production), 3/16" (heavy plate flat only). Storage: 250°F rod oven minimum per D1.1 §7.3.2.1. Exposure limit: 4 hours out of oven per Table 7.1, then re-bake at 500-800°F for minimum 2 hours per §7.3.2.4 (A5.1 classification).

Typical values for reference — always verify against your approved WPS and electrode manufacturer data.

A516 Gr.55/60

ASTM A516 Grades 55 and 60 are carbon steel plates designed for moderate and lower temperature pressure vessel service. Grade 55 (55 ksi tensile, 30 ksi yield) and Grade 60 (60 ksi tensile, 32 ksi yield) are widely used in storage tanks, heat exchangers, and process drums. Chemistry limits (0.24% max carbon for Gr.55, 0.27% max carbon for Gr.60 on thicker plate) and typical carbon equivalent of 0.38-0.44 qualify them for both Category A (non-low-hydrogen) and Category B preheat in Table 5.11. A516 is produced in plate thicknesses from 1/4" through 12". Grades 55 and 60 may be ordered as-rolled, normalized, or stress-relieved depending on the ASME Code requirements for the specific vessel design temperature and thickness.

Why This Preheat for A516 Gr.55/60 with SMAW-LH

Pressure vessel plate for storage tanks and heat exchangers at moderate strength. With low-hydrogen SMAW-LH, this combination falls under Category B rather than Category A — E7018 low-hydrogen electrodes produce typically 4-8 mL/100g diffusible hydrogen under proper rod oven conditions. The 32°F minimum preheat is lower than what non-low-hydrogen SMAW would require at the same thickness because SMAW-LH significantly reduces the driving force for hydrogen-induced cracking in the heat-affected zone.

Typical Applications for A516 Gr.55/60

Specified for atmospheric storage tank shells per API 650, heat exchanger tube sheets, air receiver vessels, condensate drums, deaerator shells, and low-pressure separator vessels. A516 Gr.60 is the workhorse for ASME VIII Division 1 vessels under 650°F design temperature. Shell-to-head circumferential seams and nozzle reinforcement pads are the primary weld details. Plate thicknesses for API 650 tank shells typically range from 5/16" at the top course to 1" or more at the bottom course depending on tank diameter and liquid specific gravity. Vertical seam welds carry the full hydrostatic head and require complete joint penetration with radiographic examination. Tank diameters range from 15 feet for small day tanks to over 300 feet for crude oil terminal storage. Shop-welded vessel shells are rolled from flat plate with longitudinal seams welded first, then circumferential seams joining shell courses together on the vessel rotator.

Why Preheat Matters at up to 3/4"

Thin material sheds heat quickly, allowing hydrogen to escape the HAZ readily — lowest preheat tier in Table 5.11.

Application context

A516 Grade 55/60 plate at or below 3/4 inch with SMAW low-hydrogen shows up in pressure-vessel-adjacent structural fabrication — vessel skid frames, support saddles, walkway brackets on tank assemblies, and structural connections to PV-grade plate where the welding falls under D1.1 (structural) rather than ASME Section IX (pressure boundary). The portability of stick welding and the controllability of LH consumables suit field-rework conditions.

Pre-weld notes

The first question on every A516 weld is which code applies. D1.1 prequalified WPS under Clause 5 covers structural welding of A516 — vessel skids, supports, and non-pressure-boundary fittings. Welds that form part of the pressure boundary fall under ASME Section IX, which has its own qualification path, essential variables, and preheat requirements that are not the same as D1.1 Table 5.11. For D1.1 structural work at this thickness, the 32°F preheat floor is satisfied by ordinary shop ambient, and the binding constraints are the LH electrode storage discipline of Clause 7.3.2.1 and matching-strength filler per Table 5.7 Group I.

What a CWI verifies

A CWI on A516 Gr.55/60 SMAW-LH thin-section work first verifies the WPS scope by reading the WPS title block and the contract documents — D1.1 structural vs ASME Section IX pressure-boundary. For D1.1 structural work, the inspection covers the LH electrode storage and atmospheric-exposure discipline per Clause 7.3, the matching-strength filler classification against Table 5.7 Group I, and the prequalified SMAW-LH limits in Table 5.1. Pressure-boundary welds get bumped to a separate ASME-qualified procedure that does not ride on the Clause 5 prequalified gate.

What is the minimum preheat for A516 Gr.55/60 with SMAW-LH at up to 3/4"?
When welding A516 Gr.55/60 at up to 3/4" using SMAW-LH, the minimum preheat temperature is 32°F (0°C) per AWS D1.1:2025 Table 5.11, Category B. SMAW-LH places this combination in Category B. This is also the minimum interpass temperature — the joint must not cool below 32°F between passes.
What Table 5.11 category applies to A516 Gr.55/60 with SMAW-LH?
When using SMAW-LH on A516 Gr.55/60, the combination falls under Category B in AWS D1.1:2025 Table 5.11. Low-hydrogen SMAW, SAW, GMAW, or FCAW process. At up to 3/4" thickness, Category B with SMAW-LH requires a minimum preheat of 32°F (0°C).
Does A516 Gr.55/60 need preheat at up to 3/4"?
When welding with SMAW-LH at up to 3/4" thickness, the minimum preheat is 32°F (0°C) — effectively ambient temperature above freezing. SMAW-LH with this steel requires no active preheating unless the base metal is below 32°F. Per Table 5.11 footnote (a), if working below freezing, preheat to at least 70°F (20°C) and maintain during welding.
Is preheat needed for plate under 3/4 inch?
For most structural steels at this thickness, the Table 5.11 minimum is 32°F (0°C) — ambient temperature above freezing. The thin cross-section allows hydrogen to diffuse out readily. Per footnote (a), if working below freezing, preheat to at least 70°F (20°C) and maintain during welding.
Which D1.1 edition is this preheat from?
AWS D1.1:2025. Table 5.11 places A516 Grade 55/60 with SMAW low-hydrogen at up to 3/4 in [20 mm] inclusive in Category B with a 32°F (0°C) minimum preheat. When base metal temperature is below 32°F [0°C], preheat to minimum 70°F [20°C] and maintain during welding (Table 5.11 footnote a).
Does my joint qualify for prequalified WPS at this preheat?
If the joint is structural — not pressure-boundary — and matches a prequalified detail in D1.1:2025 Clause 5, the matching-strength filler is from Table 5.7 Group I, and the WPS holds the 32°F minimum, the procedure is prequalified by Clause 5. Pressure-boundary welds fall outside D1.1 and must be qualified under ASME Section IX.
Why is A516 Grade 55/60 in Group I rather than a higher group given the pressure-vessel pedigree?
Table 5.6 Group I assignment is by minimum yield point/strength and tensile range, not by the steel's intended service. A516 Grade 55 has a 30 ksi yield and 55–75 ksi tensile range; A516 Grade 60 has 32 ksi yield and 60–80 ksi tensile range — both fall within the Group I envelope alongside A36, A53 Grade B, and A500 Grades B/C. Higher A516 grades (65 and 70) sit in Group II per the same table. The matching-strength filler comes from Table 5.7 Group I correspondingly.
