Practice Test FAQ

How many questions are on this CWI practice test?
This practice test has 84 questions across 14 categories covering CWI Part A topics: symbol identification, dimension reading, supplementary symbols, intermittent welds, NDE symbols, tail contents, welding processes, metallurgy, WPS and PQR, fabrication math, NDE methods, contour symbols, ISO 2553 comparison, and multiple reference lines. Questions are randomized on each attempt. The real CWI Part A exam has 150 scored questions plus 15 unscored pretest questions, covering 11 topic areas, with 135 minutes to complete.
Is this the real CWI exam?
No. This is a free practice tool for educational purposes only. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a substitute for the official AWS Certified Welding Inspector examination administered by the American Welding Society. The questions are original compositions verified against AWS A2.4:2020 and D1.1:2025 but are not from the official exam question bank. For complete CWI exam preparation, study the full AWS Welding Inspection Technology manual and the applicable code for your chosen endorsement.
What score do I need to pass the CWI exam?
The CWI exam requires a minimum score of 72 percent on each of the three parts (Part A Fundamentals, Part B Practical, and Part C Code Application). All three parts must be passed to earn CWI certification. This practice test tracks your score against the 72 percent threshold so you can gauge your readiness on the welding symbols topic area. If you consistently score above 72 percent on symbols, focus your remaining study time on the other 10 Part A topic areas.
Why do questions appear in different order each time?
Questions are randomized on each attempt to simulate the unpredictability of the real exam and to prevent memorizing answer patterns. Additionally, if you retake the quiz, questions you previously answered incorrectly are weighted to appear earlier in the queue. This adaptive approach focuses your practice on weak areas, similar to spaced repetition study techniques. Your wrong-answer history is stored locally in your browser and resets if you clear your browsing data.
